Call2Recycle Canada and Bebat: Sharing Expertise to Advance Battery Recycling

March 2026

At Call2Recycle Canada, leadership means more than operating the country’s largest battery collection and recycling network. It also means continuously learning, innovating, and collaborating with global leaders who share our commitment to environmental stewardship.

That’s why we are proud to engage in discussions and knowledge exchange with Bebat, one of Europe’s most recognized battery collection organizations. By sharing insights across continents, both organizations are challenging each other to improve systems, increase collection rates, and support the growth of a circular battery economy.

Two Leaders with a Shared Mission

Call2Recycle Canada and Bebat share a common goal: ensuring batteries are collected, managed, and recycled responsibly so that valuable materials can be recovered and reused.

Founded in 1997, Call2Recycle Canada is the country’s leading battery collection and recycling program. The not-for-profit organization works with hundreds of producers and partners to operate provincially approved programs across Canada, with more than 15,000 drop-off locations available to consumers and businesses. Since its inception, the program has diverted over 60 million kilograms of batteries from landfills, helping transform end-of-life batteries into materials for new products.

Across the Atlantic, Bebat plays a similar role in Belgium and has become a global benchmark for battery collection. Established in 1995 by battery producers, the organization manages the collection, sorting, and recycling of used batteries and operates more than 24,000 collection points, helping give billions of batteries a second life.

Like Call2Recycle, Bebat is driven by the principle that recycling batteries safely and efficiently is essential to protecting the environment and recovering valuable resources.

Learning Across Borders

Battery technologies, regulations, and consumer behaviours are evolving rapidly. As a result, stewardship organizations around the world must continuously adapt to new challenges.

By engaging with international counterparts like Bebat, Call2Recycle can exchange best practices on topics such as:

  • Improving collection infrastructure and accessibility
  • Increasing consumer participation and awareness
  • Advancing safety standards and logistics
  • Supporting evolving Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations
  • Preparing for the growing volumes of lithium-ion and e-mobility batteries

These conversations allow both organizations to benchmark their approaches and explore new opportunities to strengthen battery recycling systems.

Strengthening the Circular Battery Economy

The transition to electrification, from portable electronics to e-mobility and electric vehicles, means that batteries will play an even larger role in our daily lives. With this growth comes an increased responsibility to ensure batteries are properly managed at the end of their life.

By collaborating with global leaders like Bebat, Call2Recycle continues to reinforce its position as Canada’s trusted battery recycling partner, while contributing to the broader international effort to build a more sustainable battery ecosystem.

Together, organizations like Call2Recycle and Bebat demonstrate that progress in recycling is accelerated when knowledge, innovation, and ambition are shared across borders.
