Call2Recycle Canada and Quantum Lifecycle partner to expand battery sorting capacity in Quebec

Montreal, QC, August 21, 2024Call2Recycle, Canada’s leading battery collection and recycling program, and Quantum Lifecycle Partners LP, Canada’s largest IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) and electronics lifecycle management company, proudly announce their new agreement to expand the sorting of used batteries in Quebec. This collaboration will support the battery recycling effort in Quebec and in all Atlantic provinces, while strengthening Canada’s overall battery recycling infrastructure and supporting waste reduction and the local economy.

Call2Recycle operates Quebec’s provincial battery collection and recycling program, where it has collected and recycled over 12.3 million kg of used batteries since 2012 (including 1.8 million kilograms in 2023) through its network of almost 5,000 collection sites. To build upon this success and meet Quebec’s growing effort to recycle batteries, Call2Recycle and Quantum Lifecycle are partnering to increase the sorting capacity of used batteries in the province.

Starting in August 2024, Quantum Lifecycle’s Montreal facility will operate as Call2Recycle’s second sorting facility in Quebec, sorting used single-use and rechargeable household batteries. The partnership ensures that more used batteries are sorted locally in the province, reducing the program’s environmental footprint and related transportation emissions, and supporting the local economy.

“We are pleased to welcome Quantum Lifecycle as our newest battery sorter in Quebec,” said Joe Zenobio, President of Call2Recycle Canada. “Quebecers have consistently showed a strong commitment to environmental stewardship through their participation in our battery recycling program. Partnering with Quantum Lifecycle, a Canadian leader in sustainable environmental services, will significantly expand our local sorting capacity, meeting the growing demand for battery recycling and further advancing Quebec’s recycling goals.”

“Due to the electrification of everyday items, batteries represent a growing portion of the electronics waste stream. Quantum is pleased to help keep these items out of landfills, ensuring they get properly recycled,” said Gary Diamond, President of Quantum Lifecycle Partners.

Battery recycling plays an essential part in environmental protection by diverting used batteries from landfills and recovering their valuable components for reuse. The Call2Recycle program supports waste diversion and environmental protection across Canada by collecting and recycling a wide range of batteries, including household batteries, e-mobility batteries, and those from Electric Vehicles (EVs). Since its inception, the program has played a major role in Canada’s climate change effort by diverting nearly 50 million kilograms of batteries from landfills.
