Collaboration: The Key to Advancing Battery Recycling in Alberta and Beyond

April 2025

As we reflect on the recent launch of our “Recycle Your Batteries, Canada!” program in Alberta, it’s clear that our journey toward sustainability and responsible recycling is far from over. While April 1, 2025, marked an important milestone, it also reminds us of collaboration’s crucial role in helping us reach new heights in environmental protection and circular economy efforts.

The Long Journey of Battery Collection and Recycling

Battery collection and recycling are not new ideas but long-term commitments. Over the past 28 years, Call2Recycle has played a leading role in creating accessible and effective solutions for battery recycling across Canada, and it has resulted in the recycling of over 50 million kg of batteries since its inception. From humble beginnings, we’ve grown a vast network of collection points and reached millions of Canadians, all thanks to the partnerships we’ve formed with businesses, municipalities, and local communities.

The journey has been marked by perseverance and continuous learning—identifying new ways to manage waste, evolving technologies to handle batteries safely, and striving to ensure our programs are as accessible as possible. Yet, the true success of any recycling program hinges on collective action. It’s not enough to provide drop-off points; we must also work together to raise awareness, overcome challenges, and inspire positive behavior change.

Today we have nearly 15,000 collection sites across the country, and we keep increasing our network every day.

Collaboration: The Key to Progress

Our expansion into Alberta is an exciting development, highlighting the power of collaboration. “Working with the Alberta Recycling Management Authority (ARMA) and other local organizations ensures we are creating a system that meets both regulatory standards and the needs of residents,” said Jason Brown, Director Western Canada at Call2Recycle. “The support and buy-in of communities, businesses, and stakeholders across the province are essential to making this program a success. By working together, we can ensure that more batteries are recycled, fewer materials end up in landfills, and Alberta moves one step closer to achieving its environmental goals.”

This collaborative spirit isn’t just about meeting current needs—it’s about building a foundation for future progress. As we work with our partners, we are also learning valuable lessons about what it takes to make recycling accessible and effective in diverse regions. Alberta represents a unique opportunity for Call2Recycle to expand our reach, build new relationships, and create a model that can be replicated in other provinces and territories.

We love what we do at Call2Recycle because we keep learning every day. We expand our programs with new categories, such as the e-mobility program and EV Battery services, to meet the growing demand and use of e-bikes, e-scooters, and Electric Vehicles and responsibly manage these unique categories.

The Alberta Opportunity

Alberta is a province with incredible potential. From its growing economy to its commitment to environmental sustainability, Alberta represents a unique opportunity for Call2Recycle to make a lasting impact. With over 4 million residents, a vibrant business community, and a commitment to innovation, Alberta offers the perfect environment to pilot new recycling initiatives and drive positive change.

Call2Recycle and the Alberta Recycling Management Authority are determined to promote circular economy and share a vision of a future without waste.

Our program in Alberta aims to provide convenient and safe battery recycling solutions to all residents, whether through public facilities, retail locations, or community centers. It’s not just about collecting used batteries; it’s about empowering individuals, families, and businesses to take ownership of their role in protecting the environment. Alberta’s residents have demonstrated a clear commitment to sustainability, and Call2Recycle is proud to be a partner in this journey.

Looking Ahead

As we move forward, we remain committed to creating a cleaner, more sustainable future for all Canadians. We know the journey ahead is long, but with the support of our partners and the collaboration of communities, we are confident that we can continue to make significant strides. Alberta, with its unique challenges and opportunities, will be an exciting chapter in our ongoing mission.

We invite all Albertans to join us in this journey. Together, we can make a difference, one battery at a time.
