For the past three years, Call2Recycle Canada has partnered with Earth Rangers to bring battery recycling education to students. This year, Call2Recycle sponsored a School Assembly Program in 50 Canadian schools, including 20 in Manitoba. Students and teachers learned about the importance of diverting batteries from the landfill then were challenged to collect and recycle used batteries over a two-week period. The school with the most collections won a pizza party.
More than 5,000 students in Manitoba collected and recycled more than 1,500 kgs (3,307 lbs.) of batteries, according to Peter Kendall, executive director, Earth Rangers. “These results demonstrate the environmental impact students can have through their own individual actions.” Read the press release here.
