Call2Recycle® is pleased to announce the renewal of our R2 (Responsible Recycling) certification following a successful independent audit. R2 is a globally recognized standard for responsible reuse and recycling practices. This certification helps ensure batteries collected through our program are managed safely and responsibly, with strong controls for environmental protection, worker health and safety, and accountable downstream processing.
Call2Recycle Canada is one of the only programs in Canada certified to four complementary standards, R2v3, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and ISO 9001, providing our members with a transparent, compliant, and continuously improving solution.
Why this matters for stewardship
Battery stewardship only works when every step is trustworthy. R2 certification is one of the continuous ingredients of our success: it helps verify that materials are handled properly, routed to qualified partners, and processed in ways that protect people and the planet. For our participants, lay public, collection sites, retailers, municipalities, and industry, this renewal is further assurance that the batteries you return are managed with rigor and care.
What R2 adds to our program
- Independent oversight: Regular third-party audits assess conformance to the R2 standard.
- Environmental safeguards: Controls that minimize environmental impact during transport, sorting, and processing.
- Health & safety focus: Clear requirements that support safe handling and operations.
- Downstream due diligence: Traceable management of materials to qualified processors and end markets.
- Continuous improvement: Findings translate into actions that sharpen our performance year over year.
- Data security (where applicable): R2 includes provisions for secure data handling and destruction when electronics or embedded devices are involved—reducing information-security risks across the value chain.
Beyond R2: Our full certification framework
Together, our certifications build a comprehensive, system-wide foundation for performance, safety, and trust.
We are currently certified to:
- R2v3 (Responsible Recycling practices standard): Ensures responsible reuse and recycling with rigorous environmental, health & safety, and downstream controls.
- ISO 14001 (Environmental management system): Provides a structured framework to identify significant environmental aspects and drive continual improvement.
- ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety management system): Strengthens our systematic approach to hazard identification, risk reduction, and worker well‑being.
- ISO 9001 (Quality management system): Anchors consistent, documented processes that deliver reliable outcomes and stakeholder satisfaction.
We also add a 24/7 emergency response number (CANUTEC Transport Canada) to our shipping documents as part of routine TDG best practices.
Why multi‑standard certification matters
Our combined certifications translate into tangible value for participants and partners:
- Standardized processes: Internationally recognized frameworks keep procedures consistent and effective across sites and partners.
- Improved efficiency: Process optimization and continuous improvement reduce waste, streamline workflows, and enhance service.
- Regulatory compliance: Documented systems help demonstrate conformance with applicable laws and regulations—mitigating legal and operational risk.
- Risk management: Proactive identification, assessment, and mitigation of safety, environmental, quality, and information-security risks.
- Safety & quality you can trust: ISO 45001 and ISO 9001 embed accountable, auditable practices that protect people and ensure dependable program delivery.
- Environmental stewardship: R2v3 and ISO 14001 work together to minimize environmental impact and advance circular outcomes for recovered materials.
- Data security (as relevant): R2’s data-security requirements for applicable electronics help prevent unauthorized access or breaches.
- Competitive advantage for our members: Independent, recognized certifications differentiate our stewardship solution and support your ESG commitments.
A shared commitment
Our stewardship model depends on retailers, municipalities, collection partners, processors, and Canadians from coast to coast. R2 certification renewal and our complementary ISO certifications, recognize the high standard we hold ourselves and our network to and reflect the collective effort that keeps batteries out of landfills and valuable materials in circulation.
“This renewal is more than a milestone; it’s a signal to our partners and the public that responsible battery recycling is non-negotiable,” said Bopanna Chodumada, VP Operations at Call2Recycle. “We’re proud to maintain R2 certification, alongside our ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and ISO 9001 certifications, as part of the foundation of a strong, transparent stewardship program.”
What’s next
We’ll continue investing in safety, data-driven program improvements, and circular outcomes for the materials Canadians entrust to us—while using our integrated management systems to raise the bar year over year.
