Call2Recycle launches Annual Battery Safety Awareness Campaign

July 2025

As Canada’s leading organization for battery collection, recycling, and safety education, Call2Recycle is proud to launch the second edition of its annual Battery Safety Awareness campaign: Protect What Matters. Be Battery Safe.

Running throughout July and August 2025, the campaign underscores Call2Recycle’s commitment to supporting collection partners, including municipalities, and educating Canadians on how to safely handle, store, and recycle their used batteries, to help prevent safety incidents before they happen.

About the Campaign

Lithium-ion batteries can be crushed or damaged in waste and recycling collection vehicles, potentially causing fires at waste processing centres. The campaign encourages consumers to keep batteries out of the trash and regular recycling bins, to avoid such incidents and protect workers at waste facilities.

The campaign also addresses important subjects including terminal protection, special care instructions for e-mobility batteries, and how to identify and manage damaged, defective, and recalled (DDR) batteries.

The centrepiece of the campaign is a new Public Service Announcement (PSA) that features Fire Chief Rocco Volpe of Central York Fire Services, which will be broadcast on national TV beginning in late July.

Help Spread the Word with Supplied Toolkits

Partners can customize supplied social media graphics by adding their own logo

Together, Call2Recycle, Municipalities  and Fire Services can join forces to spread the word.

A campaign toolkit is available on Call2Recycle’s website, ready to use by all our partners.

The toolkit includes social media videos and static social media assets, newsletter content, press releases, safety tip sheets, and best practices for consumers.

Partners can even customize the assets by adding their own logo.

The toolkit also includes special e-bike safety tips for e-bike partners and consumers.

Consumers can learn more about battery safety by visiting the Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! safety page.
