Overview

Call2Recycle Canada is the premier household battery recycling service provider to battery producers, retailers, and municipalities across Canada.

Call2Recycle powers the Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! program, which facilitates the collection and recycling of nearly 5 million kilograms of household batteries per year.

Certified to the highest standards in the industry, Call2Recycle product stewardship obligations on behalf of more than 400 members.

Our best-in-class collection and recycling program ensures that batteries collected from our network of over 12,000 sites are responsibly and safely recycled, in full compliance of provincial regulations, helping obligated producers meet their responsibilities.

Obligated Producers

You may fall under Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations and obligated to participate in a battery recycling stewardship program if you manufacture, sell, distribute, license, or import batteries or products that use batteries in regulated jurisdictions (see Programs by Territory or Province).

Call2Recycle Canada is a registered Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO), helping obligated producers fulfill their regulatory responsibilities in applicable provinces and/or territories.

Certifications and Standards

Call2Recycle adheres to the most rigorous standards in the world for the safe collection, transportation, recycling, and management of batteries.

As of 2023, Call2Recycle confirmed our own commitment to safety standards by earning ISO 9001 to add to our R2v3, ISO 45001, and ISO 14001 certifications, strengthening our position as Canada’s only battery recycling organization to hold certifications across four rigorous standards. We also initiated work with our IT supplier toward their ISO 27001 certification.

Call2Recycle maintains an approved group of downstream vendors, all of whom must comply with annual audits, consistent with the requirements found in the provisions of the R2:2013 standard.

How the programs are funded

Call2Recycle applies an Environmental Handling Fee (EHF) per unit sold on applicable primary and rechargeable batteries in provinces where it operates under approved stewardship plans. The fees help to harmonize the program nationally and facilitate continuous program enhancements, along with covering the cost associated with the safe and responsible recycling of end-of-life batteries.
