Saskatoon (SK) December 17, 2024 – Call2Recycle, Canada’s leading battery collection and recycling organization, proudly announced in partnership with Earth Rangers the results of the 2024 edition of the Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! Battery Blitz contest in Saskatchewan. The award ceremony was held at Willowgrove School in Saskatoon.
Since 2015, Call2Recycle and Earth Rangers have partnered to host the Battery Blitz contest in elementary schools across Canada. This national initiative encourages students to take on the role of environmental stewards by collecting as many used batteries as possible over the contest period. This program allows young Canadians to take action to protect the environment and learn the importance of recycling batteries. The Battery Blitz contest has collected over 100,000 kg of used batteries nationwide.
In 2024, 12 elementary schools across Saskatchewan competed in the contest, collecting almost 1,000 kg of batteries in just one month. The program aims to empower students to adopt eco-friendly habits while fostering a hands-on understanding of proper battery recycling.
The top three schools will receive monetary prizes to support educational initiatives, such as purchasing learning materials, funding technology, or creating enriching experiences for students:
- 1st place: Willowgrove School
- 2nd place: St. Lorenzo Ruiz Catholic School
- 3rd place: École Wascana Plains School
“We are thrilled to see Saskatchewan students diving into battery recycling and making a positive impact on our environment,” said Jordan Covens, Director of Marketing at Call2Recycle. “By fostering awareness and action at a young age, we are helping to nurture a generation that values sustainability and understands the importance of responsible battery recycling.”
Saskatchewan residents have been active partners in battery recycling since Call2Recycle launched its dedicated program in the province in 2020. In 2023, Saskatchewanians collected over 120,000 kg of used batteries, reflecting the community’s commitment to eco-friendly practices.
The Battery Blitz Contest continues to inspire and educate youth across the country. Schools from Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario will compete again in the Spring of 2025. Schools interested in signing up for the next 2025 edition can contact Earth Rangers at [email protected].
