Programs / Battery-Powered Products / Collection Partners

Overview

In Quebec, battery regulations were expanded in 2022 to cover certain battery-powered products that contain built-in batteries weighing less than 5 kg. To help producers meet these obligations, Call2Recycle offers a turnkey collection and recycling solution for battery-powered products, as part of our Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! program.

The program supports the safe collection, transport and recycling of eligible products, enabling the recovery of batteries contained in items such as electric toothbrushes, battery-powered toys, smoke alarms, rechargeable flashlights and more.

The program helps manufacturers, importers and retailers meet their Extended Producer Responsibilities (EPR) requirements in Quebec, while also supporting municipalities and other partners in the safe collection and management of battery-powered products and their batteries.

To provide a convenient solution for consumers, the program also collects similar products with removable batteries.

The collection program is currently only available to Ecocentres (AKA municipal waste facilities) in the province of Quebec.

How the program works

1. Battery-powered products are sold in Quebec

Producers of battery-powered products with built-in batteries remit Environmental Handling Fees to Call2Recycle, which administers the safe collection, transportation and recycling of eligible battery-powered products. This ensures both single-use and rechargeable batteries contained in products such as electric toothbrushes, battery-powered toys, smoke alarms and rechargeable flashlights are safely recovered and responsibly managed.

2. Education & Awareness

Call2Recycle provides resources for public education and awareness to ensure consumers know why, when, and where to recycle their battery-powered products along with their batteries through the Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! program.

3. Return & Collection

Consumers can drop off their eligible built-in or removable battery-powered products along with their batteries at participating Ecocentres in Quebec.

4. Pre-shipment

Collection partners inspect the battery-powered products and the batteries for signs of damage and ensure that safety guidelines are followed.

5. Pickup

When collection devices are nearly full, collection partners schedule a pickup through an online portal.

All transportation costs are covered by the program.

6. Recycling!

Call2Recycle’s sorting/recycling partners weigh the box contents, reporting the total weight of battery-powered products to Call2Recycle.

Materials including the batteries are sorted and broken down into raw materials which can be used in manufacturing new batteries or products.
