Call2Recycle partners with Central York Fire Services to educate Aurora and Newmarket community and enhance safety with Smart Battery Collection Solutions

March 2025

Aurora, March 7, 2025Call2Recycle, Canada’s leading battery collection and recycling organization, is excited to announce its partnership with Central York Fire Services (CYFS) to enhance community safety and promote responsible battery disposal. This collaboration underscores both organizations’ dedication to educating the public, preventing fire hazards caused by improper battery disposal, and fostering a safer environment for residents. Call2Recycle is committed to collecting and recycling as many batteries as possible and is pleased to partner with Fire Services such as the CYFS to improve safety.

Through this initiative, Call2Recycle presents its cutting-edge Smart Containers, a technology-driven solution designed to collect and store batteries safely. These containers minimize risks, particularly those posed by lithium-ion batteries, which may overheat and ignite when mishandled or discarded improperly. Since its inception in 1997, Call2Recycle has safely recycled over 50 million kilograms of batteries.

“At Call2Recycle, we’re committed to making safety a priority,” said Joseph Chung, Vice-President of Account Management at Call2Recycle. “We’re thrilled to work with Central York Fire Services to raise awareness about the importance of responsible battery recycling. By using our Smart Containers, we aim to reduce the risks associated with battery fires and improve the safety of our communities.”

In response, Central York Fire Services has joined forces with Call2Recycle, recognizing the rising risk of battery-related fires. Community outreach to educate residents on how to safely recycle their batteries is a big focus for Central York Fire Services. By backing this program, the fire department emphasizes the importance of safe disposal practices and their role in educating residents on fire prevention.

We’re proud to partner with Call2Recycle to make it easier for Aurora and Newmarket residents to safely dispose of batteries,” says CYFS Fire Chief Rocco Volpe. “We’re committed to educating our community about ways to prevent fires and this gives our community an easy tool to keep their homes safer.”

As battery use in everyday devices continues to grow, Call2Recycle offers convenient, environmentally responsible solutions for safe disposal and recycling. Through partnerships like this, the organization is furthering its mission to create a safer, greener future for communities across Canada.
